Today, September 25, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) will be hosting a special event – Why Forests Matter – in celebration of National Forest Week.

  • The event will feature a panel of multidisciplinary speakers discussing the state of forests, their influence on society and why they matter.
  • The event is taking place at the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto.
  • You don’t need to be in Toronto to be a part of this event! The talks will be live-streamed on NCC’s website.

You can join the conversation on Twitter by using the hashtag  #forestsmatter, if you’re so inclined. It is our hope that the conversation will continue past the event, and even more Canadians will be engaged in the conservation of Canada’s forests.

This is an update to the previous blog, Funds for Youth Employment Sept.2013, More Legal Aid & Developmental Services in Ontario Canada.

As part of the new Ontario Youth Jobs Strategy, Ontario’s new Youth Employment Fund will help more young people find jobs or start their own businesses, and ensure that employers can find the skilled workers they need to grow their businesses.

  • Ontario is investing $295 million over two years in Youth Jobs Strategy.
  • Last year, 35 per cent of Employment Ontario clients were youth.
    • Sixty-seven per cent of those clients found employment and a further 14 per cent went on to further training or education

Businesses and eligible youth aged 15 to 29 can apply to the fund by making an appointment with a local Employment Ontario service provider.

This is an update to the previous blog, Health Hazard Alert: Certain Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm Brand Raw Milk Cheeses are Recalled.

Here is a statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regarding the outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.

CFIA investigation into E. coli O157:H7 in cheese

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is working with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and provincial public health authorities on an ongoing food safety investigation related to a cluster of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Alberta and British Columbia.

Information gathered by the CFIA and public health officials indicates cheese produced by Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm in British Columbia is the suspected link to the cluster of illnesses. PHAC has issued a public health notice on these illnesses.

The CFIA has issued a Health Hazard Alert warning the public not to consume the affected product. Should additional products be recalled as part of the ongoing food safety investigation, the CFIA will immediately inform the public.

  • Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm (EST 4478; Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada) is warning the public not to consume the Mild Gouda Cheese described below because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.
