This is an update to my previous blog Ontario’s Drive Clean Test Exemptions of Vehicles Less Than Seven Years Old, September 1, 2011.
Effective today the following changes to Drive Clean will save Canadians in Ontario time and money as well as protect the air we breathe by improving the quality of our air via reducing smog pollutants by an estimated 266,000 tonnes since the beginning of the Drive Clean program:
- All vehicles — cars, trucks and buses — less than seven years old no longer need to be tested when their registration is renewed.
- Passenger cars, vans and SUVs also no longer need to be tested for the following:
- transfer between family members,
- coming off lease and being purchased by the person who was leasing the vehicle, and
- renewing registration after having passed a test in the previous year.
Please note that vehicles plated as historic are now exempt from Drive Clean.

McGuinty Government Protects Air Quality For Ontarians
Changes to Drive Clean coming into effect tomorrow will save Ontario families money and protect the air our children, grandchildren and seniors breathe.
All vehicles — cars, trucks and buses — less than seven years old no longer need to be tested when their registration is renewed. Passenger cars, vans and SUVs also no longer need to be tested for the following:
- transfer between family members
- coming off lease and being purchased by the person who was leasing the vehicle
- renewing registration after having passed a test in the previous year.
Drive Clean helps ensure that our children and grandchildren have clean air to breathe by improving the quality of our air by reducing smog pollutants. These changes are part of the McGuinty government’s plan to build a stronger economy and create jobs while protecting the health and well-being of Ontarians for generations.

- Vehicles plated as historic are now exempt from Drive Clean.
- Cleaner fuels, improved emissions technology and better vehicle maintenance are factors that make testing five-year-old vehicles unnecessary.
- By requiring vehicles’ emissions systems to be tested and repaired as a condition of vehicle registration, Drive Clean plays an important role in protecting the air we breathe. Even the most sophisticated vehicle can become a gross polluter if its emissions system is not properly maintained.
