The importer, Sobeys Inc. (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), is warning the public not to consume Compliments brand salads and prepared foods described in the Public Advisory table below because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

The details regarding the voluntary recall of the affected Compliments salads and prepared foods from the marketplace are as follows:

  • Products of USA
  • These products have been distributed nationally, except the province of Quebec.
  • In addition, in-store produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps purchased prior to May 19, 2012 from the following stores and locations should be discarded and not consumed:
    • IGA and Sobeys stores in
      • British Columbia
      • Alberta
      • Saskatchewan
      • Manitoba
    • and Sobeys, Price Chopper, or Foodland stores in Ontario

These clerk-served foods contain lettuce which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

These products have been distributed nationally, except the province of Quebec.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The importer, Sobeys Inc., Mississauga, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Ces aliments servis par un préposé contiennent de la laitue susceptible d’être contaminée par Listeria monocytogenes.

Ces produits ont été distribués à l’échelle nationale, sauf dans la province de Québec.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la listériose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire qui peut entraîner une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, une raideur de la nuque et des nausées. Les femmes enceintes, les personnes âgées et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli sont particulièrement vulnérables. Dans le cas de la femme enceinte, l’infection peut n’occasionner que de légers troubles pseudo-grippaux, mais l’enfant qu’elle porte risque d’être infecté, de naître prématurément ou de mourir avant la naissance.

L’importateur, Sobeys Inc., situé à Mississauga (Ontario), retire volontairement du marché les produits visés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.

Smog Advisory: Southern, Central, Northern, & Parts of Eastern Ontario May 19, 2012

A smog advisory is in effect for southern, central, northern, and parts of eastern Ontario.

The details of the smog forecast are as follows:

  • A high pressure ridge is forecast to lie over southern Ontario for the next several days as a low pressure system moves northeastward over northwestern Ontario.
    • As a result, sunny skies and southerly winds are expected.
  • With these conditions, ozone concentrations are expected to reach the poor category across most of the province for today, tomorrow, and Monday.
  • A cold front is forecast to move eastward across the province during Monday, with southerly winds and sunny skies ahead of the front, and northerly winds and clean air behind the front.

Please note that advisories will remain in effect until further notice.

During the smog episode, individuals may experience the following symptoms:

  • eye irritation
  • heavy outdoor exercise may cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath
  • people with heart or lung disease including asthma may experience a worsening of their condition

* A Smog Advisory means that there is a strong likelihood that there may be poor air quality within the next 24 hours due to ground-level ozone and/or particulate matter.

Spare the Air Actions

During a smog advisory, there are a number of actions that you can take to help spare the air.

Travel tips – all year round:

  • leave your car at home – walk, cycle, carpool or take public transit
  • tele-conference instead of driving to meetings
  • limit car trips by doing all your errands at once, and do not let your engine idle
  • keep your car well tuned, check your tire pressure and drive at moderate speeds

Health tips:

  • avoid exposure to vehicle exhaust fumes
  • consult your doctor for specific health advice
  • wear light clothing at work while air conditioning is reduced
  • avoid strenuous exercise in the heat of the day

Electricity saving tips:

  • save electricity at home by setting your air conditioner temperature a few degrees higher (health permitting) and
  • turning off lights you are not using

Other pollution reduction tips:

  • leave lawn mowing for another day
  • restrict the use of gasoline-powered equipment
  • delay using oil-based paints, solvents and cleaners

TTC subway musician audition applications available today

The 34th Annual TTC Subway Musicians’ Auditions are coming soon. Application packages are available beginning today at the TTC head office, 1900 Yonge Street, at Davisville Station, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or on our website at www.ttc.ca.

The first 175 solo or duo acts that apply by Friday, June 22, 2012 (or whichever comes first) will be invited to audition at the Canadian National Exhibition, on Friday, August 17, Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19, 2012. The top 74 acts, as selected by a panel of judges, will be selected to play in the subway system.

Thirty-three years ago, in 1979, eight musicians were selected to perform in eight stations. Today there are 86 musicians performing at 25 stations.

Musicians must be 18 years of age or older. Completed and signed application forms must be returned to head office reception desk by Friday, June 22, 2012.

On May 17, 2012, Jim Bradley the Minister of the Environment signed the “MINISTER’S NOTICE TO PROCEED WITH TRANSIT PROJECT” (Ontario Regulation 231108; SUBSECTION 12(l)(a)) allowing the Regional Municipality of Waterloo to proceed with the  Rapid Transit Project, in accordance with the applicable environmental project report, which:

  • consists of a new 36 kilometre rapid transit system, including
    • 19 kilometres of Light Rail Transit (LRT)
      • will run from the Conestoga Mall in Waterloo to the Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener
    • and 17 kilometres of adapted Bus Rapid Transit (aBRT)
      • will run from Kitchener’s Fairview Park Mall to the Ainslie Street Terminal in Cambridge

Ontario Gives Green Light to Link Three Cities Via the Waterloo Rapid Transit

  • has  received $300 million from the McGuinty government, largest single investment in transit infrastructure in the history of the region
  • will meet the growing population’s transit demands by 2031
    • when Waterloo region’s population will reach 729,000 (an increase of 200,000 people from 2003),

New Rapid Transit To Link Kitchener, Waterloo And Cambridge

A major rapid transit project in the Waterloo region has been given the environmental green light to proceed.

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo’s rapid transit project was approved Thursday by the Minister of the Environment.

The project, consisting of 36 kilometres of both light-rail and rapid bus lines, will link the area’s three major cities — Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.

A 19-kilometre light-rail line will run from the Conestoga Mall in Waterloo to the Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener. A 17-kilometre bus rapid transit route will also run from Kitchener’s Fairview Park Mall to the Ainslie Street Terminal in Cambridge.

Increasing public transit is a part of Ontario’s plan to improve air quality and strengthen the economy. A strong economy creates jobs for Ontarians and protects the services that mean most to families – health care and education.

This year the following new public art will be added to our city of Toronto’s collection:

“Spirits of the Grotto”: New Dufferin Street Underpass Public Art Project

  • Created by the internationally acclaimed Toronto artist Luis Jacob  who

    • is a long-time Parkdale resident
    • has become one of Canada’s most prominent contemporary visual artists
    • has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe and North America, since showing his work at Germany’s prestigious Documenta exhibition in 2007
  • Consists of 34 perforated-metal panels bearing colourful, mosaic eye-shaped designs that gaze down on passing cars, cyclists and pedestrians
    • these open eye-shaped designs are intended to evoke the presence of spirits who observe alertly and full of neighbourly care
    • arranged in two rows facing one another across the underpass, these guardian spirits animate the space as a place alive with curiosity, respect for the heritage of our past, and caring alertness towards the future
  • Financing for this project came from the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services Division and City Planning Urban Design

Luis Jacob artfully eyes the walls of the Dufferin Street Underpass

On May 18, internationally acclaimed Toronto artist Luis Jacob will be joined by Councillor Gord Perks (Ward 14 Parkdale-High Park) and Councillor Ana Bailão (Ward 18 Davenport) to dedicate his new Dufferin Street Underpass public art project “Spirits of the Grotto” to the city.

The public is also invited to this dedication event, which takes place at 5 p.m. at the Dufferin Amphitheatre parkette at 1266 Queen St. W. The Dufferin Street Underpass (formerly the Dufferin Jog) runs from south of Queen Street to north of Peel Avenue.

“Spirits of the Grotto” consists of 34 perforated-metal panels bearing colourful, mosaic eye-shaped designs that gaze down on passing cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

Jacob, a long-time Parkdale resident, intended his open eye-shaped designs to evoke the presence of spirits who observe alertly and full of neighbourly care. Arranged in two rows facing one another across the underpass, these guardian spirits animate the space as a place alive with curiosity, respect for the heritage of our past, and caring alertness towards the future.

McGuinty Government Invites Families To Get Out and Enjoy Ontario This Long Weekend

This Victoria Day long weekend, get out and enjoy some of the many great events and activities happening across Ontario.

This summer marks the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, and Victoria Day weekend is a great opportunity to experience some of the historic celebrations taking place across the province.

Historic Adventures and War of 1812 Bicentennial-related activities:

  • Fanshawe Pioneer Village, May 21 — Participate in Queen Victoria’s Birthday Celebrations — complete with nineteenth century games, historical speeches, and a vintage baseball game..
  • Upper Canada Village, May 20 — Hear renditions of historical patriotic speeches, see re-enacted  military manoeuvres, lace up for the 1860s athletic games, and help out with the Village’s hand-pumped fire engine.
  • Victoria Day at Fort York, Toronto, May 21 –Celebrate the birthday of the longest reigning monarch, Queen Victoria, in Toronto’s birthplace. Enjoy tours, kids’ drill and baking in the historic kitchen.

 Outdoor Fun:

  • Warblers and Whimbrels, Presqu’ile Provincial Park near Brighton, May 19-20 – Celebrate spring at this birding hot spot where you’ll have an opportunity to see many of the smaller birds such as warblers and the shorebirds like the Whimbrel.
  • Spring Wings Weekend, Darlington Provincial Park near Bowmanville, May 19-20 – Join staff on a short hike through the park to look for birds hiding along the trails singing their hearts out! A great stop along the spring migration highway.
  • Spring Thyme on the Farm, Bronte Creek Provincial Park in Oakville, May 21 – Drop by to see and participate in some spring activities typical of the 1890s Dr Drop by to see
  • Festival of Birds, Point Pelee, May 3-21 — Be part of the spring migration at Point Pelee National Park, and take part in guided activities and social gatherings.
  • Ottawa Orienteering Fest – Ottawa – May 19-21 — Take part in a variety of orienteering events over the long weekend. Events include: sprint, middle distance, long distance and relay courses.
  • 100 Birds for 100 Years, Nipigon, May 20-21 — In celebration of the Annual Dorion Bird Festival and Parks Canada’s 100th anniversary, Parks Canada staff will be hosting a  birding event to find 100 bird species in a 24-hour period by walking and biking.

  • Awesome Animals Weekend ROMkids, Royal Ontario Museum, May 19-21 — Incredible insects, magnificent mammals, and rockin’ reptiles are some of the cool creatures you’ll meet this weekend at the ROM.
  • The Toronto International Circus Festival, HarbourKIDS, Harbourfont Toronto, May 19-21 — Three jam-packed days of circus fun, featuring unicyclists, fire-eaters, stilt walkers, balloon sculptors, crazy clowns and so much more!

Fireworks:

  • Ottawa Victoria Day Festival, Queen Juliana Park, May 11-21 — A family event with something for everyone: midway rides, petting zoo, buskers, children’s activities, live musical performances and fireworks on May 21st to wrap up the festival.
  • Toronto Victoria Day Fireworks, Ashbridges Bay Park, May 21 — Join Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for a traditional Victoria Day fireworks celebration over Lake Ontario.
  • Canada’s Wonderland, Vaughan, May 21 — Go out with a bang this Victoria Day with over 4000 explosions and custom fireworks designed just for Canada’s Wonderland, set to a soundtrack of your favourite hits.
