Phoenicia Group (St-Laurent, Quebec, Canada) is warning the public not to consume the Alkanater brand Tahina described below because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The details regarding Phoenicia Group’s voluntary recall of a certain Alkanater Brand Tahina from the marketplace are as follows:

  • Only the following product is affected by this alert:
    • Alkanater brand Tahina, sold in 454 g containers bearing UPC 6 92551 00002 0 and codes “Prod: 5/7/2011” and “Exp: 5/7/2013″
  • Consumers are advised that other 454 g containers of Alkanater brand Tahina with an additional code “Lot: TT3N-281011”, inkjetted on the container, are not affected by this recall
  • This product has been distributed nationally
  • There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product

CERTAIN ALKANATER BRAND TAHINA MAY CONTAIN SALMONELLA BACTERIA

OTTAWA, February 1, 2012 – The public warning issued on January 31, 2012 has been amended to correct the lot codes on the affected product.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Phoenicia Group are warning the public not to consume the Alkanater brand Tahina described below because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Only the following product is affected by this alert:
Alkanater brand Tahina, sold in 454 g containers bearing UPC 6 92551 00002 0 and codes “Prod: 5/7/2011” and “Exp: 5/7/2013″.

Consumers are advised that other 454 g containers of Alkanater brand Tahina with an additional code “Lot: TT3N-281011”, inkjetted on the container, are not affected by this recall.

This product has been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The importer, Phoenicia Group, St-Laurent, Quebec is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 1er février 2012 – La mise en garde publiée le 31 janvier 2012 a été modifiée afin de corriger les codes de lot du produit visé.

L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Groupe Phoenicia avisent la population de ne pas consommer le « Tahina » de marque Alkanater décrit ci-dessous parce que celui-ci pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie Salmonella.

Seul le produit suivant est visé par la présente mise en garde :
« Tahina » de marque Alkanater vendu en emballages de 454 g portant le CUP 6 92551 00002 0 et les codes « Prod: 5/7/2011 » et « Exp: 5/7/2013 ».

On avise les consommateurs que d’autres emballages de 454 g de « Tahina » de marque Alkanater portant le code supplémentaire « Lot: TT3N-281011 » imprimé à jet d’encre sur l’emballage ne sont pas visés par le présent rappel.

Ce produit a été distribué à l’échelle nationale.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ce produit n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par Salmonella ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la salmonellose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire. Chez les jeunes enfants, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli, la salmonellose peut causer des infections graves, parfois mortelles. Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme comme une forme grave d’arthrite.

L’importateur, Groupe Phoenicia, situé à St-Laurent (Québec), retire volontairement du marché le produit visé. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
