Health Hazard Alert Update #2: Certain LOTUS FINE FOOD’s Salted and Cured Fish (Fesikh) Products Recalled

This is an update to my previous blogs:

Now, the above recall has been expanded to list the following vacuum packaged salted and cured fish products (fesikh) because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum bacteria which produce toxins that may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness:

  • whole fesikh mullet
  • cut up fesikh mullet in oil
  • and whole fesikh shad

The details regarding the affected vacuum packaged fish products are as follows:

  • These products were sold in packages of varying count and weight, bearing no code or date information.
  • These products were sold from Lotus Catering and Fine Food, 1960 Lawrence Ave. E, Toronto, ON, on or before April 17, 2012.
  • There have been 3 reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Please note that food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum may not look or smell spoiled:

  • In food borne botulism, symptoms generally begin 12 to 36 hours after eating a contaminated food, but they can occur as early as six hours or as late as 10 days.
    • When diagnosed early, botulism can be treated with a botulism antitoxin which can prevent a patient’s condition from becoming worse, and reduces the chances of complications.

Anyone who has consumed this product and experiences any of the symptoms described here should see a health care provider immediately and notify their local public health unit because death can occur in severe cases:

  • nausea and/or vomiting
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • double vision
  • dry throat
  • respiratory failure and paralysis
