Health Hazard Alert-Update: More Dried Basil Products Recalled

This is an update to my previous blog Health Hazard Alert: Certain Dried BASIL Recalled.

Due to the ongoing food safety investigation, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public, distributors and food service establishments not to consume, sell, serve or use these dried Basil products described in the following updated list because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria:

Regarding the distributors’ voluntary recall of the affected dried Basil products, the details are as follows:

  • These dried basil products have been distributed in:
    • Quebec
    • Ontario
    • Manitoba
    • other provinces, possibly
  • There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these dried basil products.

Please note that food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria may not look or smell spoiled.

Certain dried BASIL may contain Salmonella bacteria

OTTAWA, August 7, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public, distributors and food service establishments not to consume, sell, serve or use the dried Basil products described below because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

This is an ongoing food safety investigation.  The CFIA is working with various parties to identify and remove all affected basil products that were made with the dried basil recalled by Shah Trading Co. Ltd., Scarborough, Ontario on August 3, 2012.

These products have been distributed in Quebec and Manitoba. However, they may have been distributed in other provinces.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The distributors are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 7 août 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) avise la population, les distributeurs et les établissements de services alimentaires de ne pas consommer, vendre ou servir les produits de basilic séché décrits ci‑dessous parce que ces produits pourraient être contaminés par la bactérie Salmonella.

Une enquête sur la salubrité des aliments est en cours. L’ACIA collabore avec diverses parties pour identifier et retirer tous les produits de basilic touchés, qui ont été faits avec le basilic séché retiré du marché, le 3 août 2012, par Shah Trading Co. Ltd. situé à Scarborough (Ontario).

Ces produits ont été distribués au Québec et au Manitoba. Il se peut toutefois qu’ils aient été distribués dans d’autres provinces.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par Salmonella ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la salmonellose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire. Chez les jeunes enfants, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli, la salmonellose peut causer des infections graves, parfois mortelles. Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme comme une forme grave d’arthrite.

Les distributeurs retirent volontairement du marché les produits visés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
