Advantage Health Matters and Back 2 the Garden are recalling various products containing organic sprouted chia seeds from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.
- Consumers should not consume the recalled products described below in the public Advisory of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

- The recalled products below have been sold nationally.
- Recall Classification: Class 1
- Class 1 is a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
- This recall was triggered by findings by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak.
- There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
- The Public Health Agency of Canada is collaborating with Provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Health Canada to investigate nine Canadian cases of Salmonella infection linked to the consumption of dried sprouted chia seed powder.
- In Canada, two strains of Salmonella have been identified associated with this outbreak: Salmonella Newport and Salmonella Hartford.
- In total, 9 cases have been reported in British Columbia (6), Alberta (1) and Quebec (2).
- One case was hospitalized and has recovered.
- No deaths have been reported.
- The investigation is ongoing but currently, 7 of 7 cases that have been interviewed have reported consumption of dried sprouted chia seed powder.

- The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are also investigating similar cases of Salmonella, and have recalled three sprouted chia seed powder products linked to their investigation.

What you should do
Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

This recall was triggered by findings by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.
The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace.

Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme la fièvre, des maux de tête, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme, notamment une forme grave d’arthrite.

Contexte
Ce rappel découle d’informations obtenues par l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) au cours d’une enquête sur une éclosion de maladie d’origine alimentaire. L’ACIA procède actuellement à une enquête sur la salubrité des aliments qui pourrait entraîner le rappel d’autres produits. Tout autre rappel de produit à haut risque sera signalé au public au moyen d’une mise à jour de l’avis de rappel.
L’ACIA veille à ce que l’industrie retire du marché les produits faisant l’objet du rappel.
