Munch & Save

Eat cheese and save $$$!

What is sweet is cheese as a good source of protein, and calcium for teeth and bones, especially in growing children and active seniors. And what is loveable is eating cheese and saving a lot of money at the same time.

How? Buy cheese in slabs of 500 grams!

Surprisingly, some cheese with brand names cost a lot less than cheese with non-brand names. The reason is that the brand-name companies want to encourage the consumers to buy all the stock of cheese that will expire in a few months. So these companies lower their prices from the regular price of about $7-$8 to about $4-$5. We usually buy 3 slabs to last us for about 3-4 weeks when we eat cheese every day.

You may not like the idea of having such a big piece of cheese (500 grams) sitting in the refrigerator exposed and eventually dried up after it’s packaging is cut opened. However, here are the steps to a simple solution:

  1. Buy a circular, marble cheese serving board set that includes a glass dome cover; we bought our set on sale just a few days before Christmas of last year.
  2. After opening the package, slice the cheese slab into 1/2 inch wide rectangular pieces.
  3. Place all the pieces onto the marble serving board.
  4. Cover the cheese pieces with the glass dome which helps keep the cheese from drying up, and store on the top shelf in the refrigerator.

There you have it: a loveable way of eating cheese and saving money at the same time!
