Ontario’s Smog Advisory: Expanded to Include City of Ottawa & Vicinity May 20, 2012

This is an update to my previous blog Smog Advisory: Southern, Central, Northern, & Parts of Eastern Ontario May 19, 2012.

The existing Smog Advisory of  May 19, 2012, is now expanded to include the following additional forecast regions in Ontario, Canada:

  • Brockville-Leeds and Grenville
  • City of Ottawa
  • Cornwall-Morrisburg
  • Prescott and Russell
  • Renfrew-Pembroke-Barry’s Bay
  • Smiths Falls-Lanark-Sharbot Lake

Air Quality Index (AQI) Category: 50-99 Poor Poor, as shown in this Air Quality Forecast map:

“Hot and sunny conditions with southerly winds are resulting in elevated smog levels in southern, central, northern, and eastern Ontario.

This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

Did you know?

  • A Smog Advisory is related to the Air Quality Index (AQI), which rates how clean the air is.
    • The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 100+.
    • Higher numbers mean higher health risks.
  • A Smog Advisory is issued in your region when the AQI is expected to reach 50 in the next 24 hours.
    • It can be lifted once the AQI is expected to reach or drops below 50.
  • Smog is made up of a complex mixture of air pollutants that are sometimes visible, such as a brownish-yellow haze over cities; sometimes not.
  • Smog is harmful to the lungs and heart.
    • Even in healthy people, smog can reduce lung function.”
