Ontario’s Total New Investments from China: Almost $1 Billion Will Create 1,800 Canadian Jobs

This is an update to the previous blog, Ontario Secured About $572 Million Investment Projects from China to Create up to 570 Canadian Jobs.

The following new agreements signed on October 31, 2014, as part of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s mission to China will bring 850 new jobs to Ontario communities:

  • Yiwu North America Corporation announced a $100-million investment to establish a new trading centre in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
    • The centre will serve as a hub for international manufacturers and distributors to market their products in North America.
    • The first phase of the project is expected to create 800 jobs.
  • Respon International, in a joint venture with Love & Health Venture Capital, will develop the Respon Financial Plaza and offer financial management and services in Canada.
    • The company will invest $9 million and create 50 new jobs.
  • Tourism Toronto signed an agreement with Perfect China to hold its annual convention in the city in 2016.
    • Perfect China markets health food, household and beauty products internationally.
    • The value of this opportunity is $25 million and will bring 5,000 Chinese visitors to Toronto.

New deals announced on November 1, the final day of the mission, included:

  • Huawei, one of the world’s leading telecommunications technology companies. Huawei’s Canadian headquarters is in Markham.
    • The company is planning a major expansion in Ontario valued at up to $210 million over the next five years.
    • The investment will create up to 325 new jobs in Ontario, including approximately 250 positions for engineers and researchers and at least 75 new marketing, sales and support positions.

Ontario delegates signed 26 agreements during the week-long mission.

  • This mission builds on Minister of Research and Innovation Reza Moridi’s science and technology mission to China in March 2014, which resulted in 12 new collaboration projects between Ontario and Chinese research institutions and industry partners.

Ontario attracted a total of $966 million in new investment by Chinese companies during Premier Kathleen Wynne’s mission to China. These projects will create 1,800 jobs in communities across the province.

Ontario attracted $966 million in new investment by Chinese companies during Premier Kathleen Wynne’s mission to China. These projects will create 1,800 jobs in communities across the province.

This includes a new deal announced today, the final day of the mission, at the Beijing research and development centre of Huawei. One of the world’s leading telecommunications technology companies, Huawei’s Canadian headquarters is in Markham. The company is planning a major expansion in Ontario valued at up to $210 million over the next five years. The investment will create up to 325 new jobs in Ontario, including approximately 250 positions for engineers and researchers and at least 75 new marketing, sales and support positions.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, during her first trade mission to China, announced on October 27 and 28, 2014, that Ontario secured the following significant new investments from Chinese partners:

  • October 27
    • Suzhou Xingya Investment Company announced it will invest about $20 million in a new steel nail manufacturing plant in Kitchener, which will create up to 80 new jobs for Ontarians.
    • Jiangsu Huayi Technology Co. announced an investment in Ontario’s medical sector valued at $40 million that will create 50 jobs.
    • And Canadian Solar Solutions Inc. announced an investment of $70 million to build solar-powered technology, which will lead to 100 new manufacturing jobs in Ontario.
    • Delegates travelling with the Ontario mission signed 13 agreements that will strengthen Ontario’s collaborative relationship with China. They are focused on environmental and medical technologies.
    • Jiangsu province recently announced it has selected Toronto to be the home of its Agricultural Talents Training Centre, which is set to open in 2015.

  • October 28
    • Greenland Group, a global property development company based in Shanghai, will build a pair of residential towers in downtown Toronto. Construction on the $400-million project is scheduled to begin within six months and will create up to 200 jobs.
    • Shanghai Yuyuan Tourist Mart and Mennie Canada Ltd. will set up a joint venture in Toronto, investing $5 million in four Chinese restaurants over the next three years. This investment will create 80 jobs in several locations in Ontario, including Toronto, Markham and Niagara Falls.
    • ZTE Canada, a global telecommunications equipment company, plans to invest $17 million over the next three years in an Ottawa research and development centre. This is expected to create 40 new jobs.
    • EHC Global and Shanghai Wei Long Enterprise will partner in the design, manufacture, sales and service of components for the global lift industry, which includes elevators and escalators. The value of the contract could reach $20 million over the next three years, and will create up to 20 new jobs.
    • Ontario and the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote increased R&D and commercialization partnerships.

In total, Ontario secured about $572 million investment projects from China to create up to 570 Canadian jobs.

Ontario secured significant new investments from Chinese partners today, as part of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s first trade mission to China. These investments will create jobs in several communities, including Toronto, Ottawa, Markham and Niagara Falls.
