As part of the merry-making for the holiday season, come on over with the children to the NFB Mediatheque in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for the early December animation workshops (for ages 3-13), and the Winter Wonderland! holiday animation workshops (for ages 6 to 13) which will be offered twice a day, at 12 PM and 3 PM, along with a holiday-themed screening program in the NFB Cinema!

The themes and schedule of the animation workshops for the holiday season are as follows:

Thursday December 30 – Snowy Treetops (Paint on cel) Watch out for falling snow in our animated forest!

Friday December 31 – Fluffy Snowflakes (2D) They say no two snowflakes are exactly alike… animate your very own!

Sunday January 2 – Holiday Baking (3D clay) Make your own tantalizing treats in our creative kitchen… no cooking experience required!

In the picture-postcard community of North Vancouver, local bottle pickers have turned the act of binning into a thriving subculture of shopping cart racing.

November 24 – Paris 1919 (2008)

Inspired by Margaret MacMillan’s landmark book, Paris 1919 takes us inside the most ambitious peace talks in history with a vivid sense of character and narrative.

December 1 – Examined Life (2008)

Filmmaker Astra Taylor accompanies some of today’s most influential thinkers on a series of unique excursions through places and spaces that hold particular resonance for them and their ideas.

December 8 – Junior (2008)

Taking in one complete season with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, this film reveals the daily lives of managers and players on this Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team.

December 15 – Project Grizzly (1996)

Troy James Hurtubise is a “close-quarter bear researcher,” who is obsessed with going face-to-face with a deadly grizzly bear, and so creates what he hopes is a grizzly-proof suit of armour.

Green Screens partners films from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) with experts and panellists selected by the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy (CIELAP)

A panel discussion will follow the screening on the topic of biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), with Anne Mitchell, CIELAP’s former Executive Director, who was previously a representative on the Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee and is a member of the Biotechnology Reference Group of the Canadian Council of Churches; and Pinayur Rajagopal, who worked at the Max Planck Institute in Munich before coming to teach at York University in Toronto.  The two are working on a pamphlet on agricultural biotechnology to be published by the Quaker Institute for the Future.

Director Marie-Monique Robin conducted a painstaking three year investigation on Monsanto in North and South America, Europe and Asia in order to make ‘The World According To Monsanto’ film.

‘The World According to Monsanto’ film depicts “Monsanto’s quest for market supremacy, to the detriment of global food security and environmental stability.”

Here is a brief bio with shocking revelations of Monsanto:

• founded in 1901 as a chemical company in St. Louis, Missouri, USA
• has 17,500 employees
• 2006 sales figure of $7.5 billion
• operations in 46 countries
• world leader in genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
• one of the most controversial corporations in industrial history
• since 1901, faced trial after trial due to the toxicity of its products
• toxic products include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polystyrene, devastating herbicides like Agent Orange, used during the Vietnam War, and bovine growth hormones, which are unauthorized in Canada and banned in Europe
• has “reinvented itself as a “life sciences” company converted to the virtues of sustainable development”

‘The World According to Monsanto’ points out that “thanks to its genetically modified seeds engineered among other things to withstand Monsanto’s Roundup, the world’s bestselling herbicide, the company claims it wants to solve world hunger while reducing environmental damage. The Elder Project at the NFB Cinema

Tomorrow, October 1st, is the International Day of Older Persons. As a celebration of the International Day of Older Persons, the National Film Board of Canada (Toronto, Ontario) invites you to see the “The Elder Project” film for free in the NFB Cinema of the NFB Mediatheque.

Dr. Norah Keating, Chair, North American Region, International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, called The Elder Project film “Sensitive, intimate and moving.” The Elder Project portrays seven diverse seniors, recording over two years their experiences for a series of short and candid episodic stories.

The Elder Project provides an opportunity for older persons of ages 80 and over to have their voices heard on such issues as limitations of age and disease.

Also, you will gain an intimate insight into the lives of older adults in The Elder Project which is then followed by a panel discussion.

You are invited to celebrate FÊTE DE LA CULTURE/CULTURE DAYS at the NFB Toronto Mediatheque. The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) Toronto Mediatheque is hosting a screening of short documentaries about Francophone culture on Saturday, September 25, and a French-language animation workshop on Sunday, September 26.  As part of the Canada-wide Culture Days celebration, these FREE Fête de la culture/Culture Days events are depicted as follows:

C’est la fête de la culture! À cette occasion, trois films réalisés dans le cadre du concours Tremplin seront présentés à compter de 14 h. Au programme : beauté, émotion et exclusivités! Ainsi vous pourrez voir en première torontoise Habiter la danse, de Julien Cadieux; suivre la chorale Saint-Jean jusqu’à Québec dans Le chœur d’une culture, de Marie-France Guerrette; et découvrir en première mondiale un autre film de cette cinéaste, Mon père, le roi, le bouleversant témoignage d’un adulte ayant vécu une partie de son enfance dans une secte. Cette projection sera suivie d’une discussion, via Skype, avec la réalisatrice Marie-France Guerrette. (Films sous-titrés en anglais)

Le dimanche 26 septembre, à 13 h – Cinéastes d’un jour
Un atelier spécial  ANIMACTION sera offert en français aux cinéastes en herbe (6 à 13 ans) qui s’inspireront de films primés de l’ONF, notamment Le printemps de Mélie, avant d’entreprendre leur propre création. Avec l’aide des moniteurs professionnels de l’ONF, ils réaliseront un film d’animation, du début jusqu’à la fin. Cet atelier pratique procure aux jeunes les outils dont ils ont besoin pour donner vie à leurs histoires. Chaque réalisateur recevra son film par courriel et pourra ainsi le faire voir à ses parents et amis.

FÊTE DE LA CULTURE
Celebrate Francophone culture

NFB Cinema, Saturday September 25 at 2 PM
It’s a celebration of francophone culture! On this occasion, three films from the Tremplin competition will be presented at 2 PM. The program includes beauty, emotion and exclusive premieres! Come experience the Toronto premiere of Inhabiting Dance, by Julien Cadieux, then follow the Saint Jean chorus to Quebec in Marie-France Guerrette’s Together in Harmony, and finally discover the world premiere of Guerrette’s My Father, the King, a heart-wrenching tale of an adult coming to terms with his childhood spent in a cult. This screening will be followed by a discussion on Skype with director Marie-France Guerrette. (Films subtitled in English)

Be a filmmaker for a day!  Sunday September 26 at 1 PM

A special French-language Animate This! workshop for budding filmmakers (ages 6-13), where they will be inspired by award winning NFB films, including Molly in Springtime, before making their directorial debut. They will then create their own animated film from start to finish, aided by professional NFB facilitators.  This hands-on workshop will give kids the tools they need to bring their stories to life. The final film will be emailed out so that it can be shared with friends and family.

Local Farm Food in Green Ontario

Green Screens is a monthly program at the NFB Mediatheque which highlights a different environmental issue each month, in partnership with CIELAP – Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy - (local farm food practices being one such example). The NFB Mediatheque selects the NFB (National Film Board of Canada) films to screen, and CIELAP provides the panellists.

On Wednesday, July 7th, Green Screens presented a free film event which included the feature film, Earth to Mouth, a panel discussion about the importance of supporting local farmers in Ontario, Canada, and a reception which followed the screening.

The panel discussion of Green Screens featured Wally Seccombe, Chair, Everdale: Organic Farm & Environmental Learning Centre, and Susan Murray, Director of Communications, Greenbelt Foundation. Samples of local food were provided by Karma Cooperative.

Green Screens entertained and informed us about Green Ontario as shown in the following SweetLoveable Videos (Part 1 and Part 2).  Thank you Jennifer, Melissa and Kate for your valuable help in the production of  the following Green Screens for Green Ontario.

A program in Toronto, Ontario, that highlights the importance of sustainable agriculture and celebrates local food practices. A panel discussion and reception follow the screening – sample local produce and discuss the importance of supporting local farmers in Ontario, Canada.

Filmed at the Wing Fong Farm in Ontario, this documentary follows the tilling, planting and harvesting of Asian vegetables destined for Chinese markets and restaurants.
