This is an update to these previous blogs:

Additional product information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

  • Industry is recalling various products containing organic sprouted chia seeds from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella bacteria contamination.
    • Consumers should not consume the recalled products described in the third, fourth and fifth lists provided in the CFIA’s advisories.

    • Advantage Health Matters is recalling various products containing sprouted chia seeds from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.
    • Consumers should not consume the recalled products described in this list.
      • These products have been sold nationally and through Internet sales.
      • This recall has been issued as part of a foodborne illness outbreak investigation; however, there are no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these particular products.

    • Advantage Health Matters and Back 2 the Garden are recalling various products containing chia seeds or sprouted chia seed powder from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.
      • Consumers should not consume the recalled products described in this list.
      • Please note that the affected products listed in the table may have been sold without a code marked on the package.
      • These products without a code would also be included in the recall.
    • This recall has been issued as part of a foodborne illness outbreak investigation.
      • There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of some of these products.
  • Fifth List of Recalled Products  /  Cinquième liste des produits visés par le rappel

    • BioEssential Botanicals is voluntarily recalling sprouted chia powder sold in bulk due to possible Salmonella contamination.
    • The bulk product has been used to manufacture various products under several brand names.
      1. Consumers should not consume the recalled products described in this list.
      2. Please note that the affected products listed in the table may have been sold without a code marked on the package.
      3. These products without a code would also be included in the recall.
    • This recall has been issued as part of a foodborne illness outbreak investigation.
      • There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of some of these products.

The other details of these recalls are as follows.

  •  The above products of these three lists have been sold nationally.
    • Please check to see if you have recalled products in your home.
    • Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the stores where they were purchased.
  • Recall Classification: Class 1.
    • Class 1 is a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
    • This recall was triggered by findings by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak.

Did you know?

  •  The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issues public advisories and email notifications for food recalls for all high-risk food recalls (mainly Class 1) when the product is available for sale or could be in consumers’ homes.
  •  All other recalls (Class 2 and 3) and food products that are sold exclusively to restaurants, are posted on the CFIA’s Food Recall Report.
  •  Email notifications are also available for all allergen recalls.
