This is an update to the previous blog Jack Layton: “Let Us be Loving, Hopeful and Optimistic.”

Jack Layton was former Leader of the Official Opposition (Canada) and the New Democratic Party, a former Toronto City Councillor and Past-President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

This Thursday,  August 22, at 11:45 a.m. (remarks: 12 p.m.), the City of Toronto will honour of the late Jack Layton at Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, 9 Queens Quay W., in the following ways.

  • Artwork dedication by unveiling a bronze sculpture at 11:45 am.
    • The life-size monument, which was created by well known Toronto sculptor David Pellettier (tenured professor at the Ontario College of Art and Design University), was donated through fundraising by the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL).
    • The sculpture, entitled “Jack’s got your back. Stronger Together: The Layton Memorial,” is a life-sized bronze statue of Jack sitting on the back seat of a tandem bicycle, with room on the front seat for visitors to have their picture taken “riding with Jack.”
      • The front seat welcomes visitors to sit and have their photo taken “with Jack at their back.”
  • Official recognition of the renaming of the Toronto Island Ferry Terminal to the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.

“This will be an historic event with Olivia Chow, members of the Layton Family and representatives of the City of Toronto present to receive this wonderful gift from the labour movement and supporters to the people of Canada, ” stated Sid Ryan, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour.

Jack Layton remembered with artwork dedication and official naming of Toronto’s ferry docks

Councillor Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre-Rosedale) and other City of Toronto officials will join members of Jack Layton’s family, including Olivia Chow (MP, Trinity-Spadina) and Councillor Mike Layton (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina), and Sid Ryan, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), to unveil a bronze sculpture in honour of the late Jack Layton. The event will also officially recognize the renaming of the Toronto Island Ferry Terminal to the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.
