Canadian Food Inspection Agency: 10 New Inspection Verification Teams Oversee Food Safety System 2014

The Government of Canada has committed $16 million over three years to establish the Inspection Verification Teams (IVTs).

  • The IVTs’ activities are over and above regular inspections conducted every day in facilities across Canada in order to oversee the performance of Canada’s food safety system.

Today, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) implements new IVTs.

  • Starting this month, six teams of three inspection verification officers will begin conducting targeted verifications at federally registered food establishments such as slaughter and meat production facilities.
  • An additional four teams will be operational by the fall for a total of 10 teams and 30 verification officers in 2014.

Existing front-line CFIA inspectors will continue to conduct specified daily tasks to verify that a plant’s food safety requirements are being met while the IVTs have a broader oversight role.

The duties of the inspection verification officers include the following.

  • They will conduct targeted spot checks in federally registered food establishments across the country with the aim of verifying that the overall food safety system is effective, and that inspection processes are consistently and rigorously followed and enforced.
    • The verifications will focus on areas critical to the inspection and production of safe food, such as plant sanitation and the effectiveness of a company’s response to food recalls.
  • Any non-compliance identified during these verifications which could affect food safety will be dealt with immediately.
  • The IVTs will identify trends, best practices and areas for improvement, and make sure that inspectors have the tools they need.

Federally registered establishments will be selected based on a pre-determined set of selection criteria that will be evaluated every year.

  • These selection criteria may include, but are not limited to compliance history; number and type of corrective actions requests; and recalls.

Economic Action Plan 2014 is delivering nearly $400M to strengthen Canada’s healthy and safe food system.

  • This includes, enhancing food inspection programs and hiring more inspectors.
