Regarding the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)’s ongoing food safety investigation and testing of beef burgers from Cardinal Meat Specialists Limited (Establishment 752 – the producing facility), the recall update now includes a fourth list of of the following additional product:
- Cardinal Meat Specialists Ltd. is warning the public not to consume the Cardinal Select brand Prime Rib Beef Burgers described below because this product may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria
- The affected Cardinal brand Prime Rib Beef Burgers:

OTTAWA, December 15, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Cardinal Meat Specialists Ltd. are warning the public not to consume the Cardinal Select brand Prime Rib Beef Burgers described below because this product may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.
The affected product, Cardinal brand Prime Rib Beef Burgers, is sold in 1.13 kg packages bearing UPC 0 63351 01561 1. The affected product bears the code BEST BEFORE 2013 JL 31 EST 752.
This product has been distributed nationally.
This recall is the result of an ongoing food safety investigation being conducted at Cardinal Meat Specialists Ltd. This investigation was initiated as a result of recent product testing associated with an outbreak investigation. There may be recalls of additional products as the investigation at this facility continues.
Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 15 décembre 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments et l’entreprise Cardinal Meat Specialists Ltd. avisent la population de ne pas consommer les burgers de côte de boeuf de marque Cardinal Select décrits ci-après parce qu’ils peuvent être contaminés par la bactérie E. coli O157:H7
Le produit visé, les burgers de côte de boeuf de marque Cardinal Select, est vendu en emballages de 1,13 kg portant le CUP 0 63351 01561 1. Le produit porte la date de péremption du 31 juillet 2013 et le code EST 752 (BEST BEFORE / MEILLEUR AVANT 2013 JL 31 EST 752).
Ce produit a été distribué à l’échelle nationale.
Le présent rappel fait partie d’une enquête sur la salubrité des aliments menée actuellement à l’établissement Cardinal Meat Specialists Ltd. Cette enquête a été lancée à la suite d’une analyse récente de produits dans le cadre d’une enquête sur une éclosion de maladie. Il pourrait y avoir des rappels d’autres produits à mesure qu’avance l’enquête à cet établissement.
Les aliments contaminés par E. coli O157:H7 ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut occasionner des maladies graves, voire mortelles, qui se manifestent notamment par des douleurs abdominales intenses et de la diarrhée sanguine. Certaines personnes peuvent avoir des convulsions ou des accidents vasculaires cérébraux, d’autres peuvent avoir besoin de transfusions sanguines et de dialyse. Dans certains cas, les dommages causés aux reins sont permanents. Dans les cas graves, la contamination par E. coli O157:H7 peut causer la mort.
L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
