Health Hazard Alert: Certain Refrigerated Cold Smoked Sockeye Salmon Trim Products Recalled

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the refrigerated cold smoked sockeye salmon trim products described below because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

These affected products were sold by different retailers in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The details regarding the retailers’ voluntary recall of these affected products from the marketplace are as follows:

  • The affected products (as described in the Public Advisory table below) were sold refrigerated at various weights from February 16 to February 24 inclusively
  • The affected products may have also been sold unlabelled over the counter at the stores listed in the Public Advisory table below
  • Consumers who are unsure whether they have the affected products are advised to check with their retailer
  • There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products

OTTAWA, February 25, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the refrigerated cold smoked sockeye salmon trim products described below because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The following products, sold refrigerated at various weights from February 16 to February 24 inclusively, are affected by this alert:

The affected products may have also been sold unlabelled over the counter at the stores listed above. Consumers who are unsure whether they have the affected products are advised to check with their retailer.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The retailers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recalls.

OTTAWA, le 25 février 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) avise la population de ne pas consommer les produits de saumon rouge fumé à froid réfrigérés décrits ci dessous parce que ces produits pourraient être contaminés par Listeria monocytogenes.

Les produits suivants, vendus réfrigérés dans divers formats du 16 février au 24 février inclusivement, sont visés par cette mise en garde :

Les produits touchés peuvent aussi avoir été vendus sans étiquette au comptoir dans les magasins susmentionnés. Les consommateurs qui ne sont pas certains s’ils ont acheté les produits visés devraient se renseigner auprès de leur détaillant.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la listériose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire qui peut entraîner une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, une raideur de la nuque et des nausées. Les femmes enceintes, les personnes âgées et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli sont particulièrement vulnérables. Dans le cas de la femme enceinte, l’infection peut n’occasionner que de légers troubles pseudo-grippaux, mais l’enfant qu’elle porte risque d’être infecté, de naître prématurément ou de mourir avant la naissance.

Les détaillants retirent volontairement du marché les produits touchés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
