Veg-Pak Produce Ltd. (the importer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is warning consumers, distributors and retailers not to consume, distribute or sell the jalapeno peppers described below because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
The details regarding Veg-Pak Produce Ltd‘s voluntary recall of the affected jalapeno peppers, produce of USA, from the marketplace are as follows:
- The affected jalapeno peppers, produce of USA, were known to have been sold in bulk from the following stores in Ontario:
- Food Basics
- Ho Long Supermarket
- Kitchen Table Grocery Stores
- Longo’s
- Metro
- Michael Angelo’s
- Oak Ridges Food Market
- Oceans Fresh Food Market
- Oriental Food Market
- P.A.T. Mart
- Starwind Supermarket
- Trinity Supermarket
- They may have also been sold from other retail stores in Ontario.
- The affected peppers were sold at retail between March 8, 2012 and March 28, 2012, inclusively.
- Consumers who have purchased bulk, unlabelled jalapeno peppers between these dates are advised to check with their place of purchase to determine if they have the affected product.
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is also warning other retailers and distributors in Ontario not to sell, use or distribute the following wholesale packages of peppers:
- 1 bushel boxes bearing the South Florida Produce logo; or
- 1/2 bushel boxes bearing JALAPENO PEPPERS, PRODUCT OF USA and Veg-Pak’s name and address on a sticker.
- The wholesale packages were sold by Veg-Pak Produce at the Ontario Food Terminal, from March 8 to March 15, 2012, inclusively.
- There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The importer, Veg-Pak Produce Ltd., Toronto, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

En effet, le produit touché pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie Salmonella.
Le produit visé, les piments jalapeño, un produit frais des États-Unis, a été vendu en vrac dans les magasins de l’Ontario suivant :

Les piments visés ont été vendus au détail entre le 8 mars et le 28 mars 2012, inclusivement.
Les consommateurs qui ont acheté des piments jalapeño sans étiquette et en vrac durant la période visée devraient s’adresser à leur point de vente pour savoir si le produit est visé par ce rappel.
L’ACIA avise également les autres détaillants et distributeurs en Ontario de ne pas vendre, utiliser ou distribuer les emballages en gros de piments suivants :
- Boîtes d’un boisseau portant le logo de South Florida Produce;
- Boîtes d’un demi-boisseau munies d’un autocollant indiquant JALAPENO PEPPERS, PRODUCT OF USA, ainsi que le nom et l’adresse de l’entreprise Veg-Pak.
Les emballages en gros ont été vendus par Veg-Pak Produce au Marché des produits alimentaires de l’Ontario, du 8 au 15 mars 2012 inclusivement.
Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n’a été signalé.
Les aliments contaminés par Salmonella ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la salmonellose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire. Chez les jeunes enfants, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli, la salmonellose peut causer des infections graves, parfois mortelles. Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme comme une forme grave d’arthrite.
L’importateur, Veg-Pak Produce Ltd., de Toronto (Ontario), retire volontairement du marché le produit visé. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
