Health Hazard Alert: Certain COMPLIMENTS Brand Salads and Prepared Foods Recalled

The importer, Sobeys Inc. (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), is warning the public not to consume Compliments brand salads and prepared foods described in the Public Advisory table below because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

The details regarding the voluntary recall of the affected Compliments salads and prepared foods from the marketplace are as follows:

  • Products of USA
  • These products have been distributed nationally, except the province of Quebec.
  • In addition, in-store produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps, purchased prior to May 19, 2012, from the following stores and locations, should be discarded and not consumed:
    • IGA and Sobeys stores in
      • British Columbia
      • Alberta
      • Saskatchewan
      • Manitoba
    • and Sobeys, Price Chopper, or Foodland stores in Ontario
    • these clerk-served foods contain lettuce which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes
  • There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The following Compliments salads, product of USA, are affected by this alert.

In addition, in store produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps purchased prior to May 19, 2012 from IGA and Sobeys stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Sobeys, Price Chopper, or Foodland stores in Ontario should be discarded and not consumed. These clerk-served foods contain lettuce which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

These products have been distributed nationally, except the province of Quebec.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The importer, Sobeys Inc., Mississauga, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 18 mai 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Sobeys Inc. avisent la population de ne pas consommer les salades de marque Compliments et les aliments prêts à servir décrits ci-dessous parce que ces produits pourraient être contaminés par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes.

Les salades suivantes de marque Compliments, produites aux États Unis, sont visées par cette mise en garde.

De plus, les produits préparés en magasin contenant de la laitue comme les salades, les sandwichs et les sandwichs roulés achetés avant le 19 mai 2012 dans les magasins IGA et Sobeys en Colombie-Britannique, en Alberta, en Saskatchewan et au Manitoba, et les magasins Sobeys, Price Chopper et Foodland en Ontario devraient être jetés et ne devraient pas être consommés. Ces aliments servis par un préposé contiennent de la laitue susceptible d’être contaminée par Listeria monocytogenes.

Ces produits ont été distribués à l’échelle nationale, sauf dans la province de Québec.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la listériose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire qui peut entraîner une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, une raideur de la nuque et des nausées. Les femmes enceintes, les personnes âgées et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli sont particulièrement vulnérables. Dans le cas de la femme enceinte, l’infection peut n’occasionner que de légers troubles pseudo-grippaux, mais l’enfant qu’elle porte risque d’être infecté, de naître prématurément ou de mourir avant la naissance.

L’importateur, Sobeys Inc., situé à Mississauga (Ontario), retire volontairement du marché les produits visés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
