The importer, Phoenicia Group Inc. (St-Laurent, Quebec, Canada), is warning the public not to consume Alkanater brand Tahina, described below, because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

Certain ALKANATER BRAND TAHINA may contain SALMONELLA BACTERIA

OTTAWA, June 26, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Phoenicia Group Inc. are warning the public not to consume Alkanater brand Tahina, described below, because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected product, Alkanater brand Tahina, is sold in 454 g containers bearing the UPC 6 92551 00002 0, lot code TT3N-280312 and codes PRO: 28/03/2012 AND EXP: 28/03/2014.

This product has been distributed in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick and may have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The importer, Phoenicia Group Inc., St-Laurent, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 26 juin 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Groupe Phoenicia Inc. avisent la population de ne pas consommer le Tahina de marque Alkanater décrit ci-dessous, car ce produit pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie Salmonella.

Le produit visé, le Tahina de marque Alkanater, est vendu en contenants de 454 g portant le CUP 6 92551 00002 0, le code de lot TT3N-280312 et les codes PRO: 28/03/2012 ET EXP: 28/03/2014.

Ce produit a été distribué au Québec, en Ontario, en Alberta, au Manitoba et au Nouveau-Brunswick, mais pourrait aussi l’avoir été à l’échelle nationale.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ce produit n’a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par Salmonella ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la salmonellose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire. Chez les jeunes enfants, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli, la salmonellose peut causer des infections graves, parfois mortelles. Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme comme une forme grave d’arthrite.

L’importateur, Groupe Phoenicia Inc., situé à St-Laurent (Québec), retire volontairement du marché les produits visés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
