As the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is monitoring the recall of Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria, the distribution information is now updated as follows:
- This product has been distributed in:
- Ontario
- Manitoba
- Saskatchewan
- Alberta
- British Columbia
- Nunavut
- Yukon
- Northwest Territories
Here are the other details of this recall:
- Produce of USA
- Sold in a plastic package containing 1 head of lettuce
- The package bears the UPC 0 27918 20314 9
- The affected product was sold at retail from August 8, 2012 through August 17, 2012
- There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product
- The Canadian distributors are voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace

OTTAWA, August 20, 2012 – The public warning issued on August 17, 2012 has been expanded to include additional distribution information.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce described below because this product may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.
The affected product, Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce, produce of USA, is sold in a plastic package containing 1 head of lettuce. The package bears the UPC 0 27918 20314 9. The affected product was sold at retail from August 8, 2012 through August 17, 2012.
This product has been distributed in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut, Yukon, and Northwest Territories.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
The Canadian distributors are voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 20 août 2012 – La portée de la mise en garde du 17 août 2012 a été élargie pour inclure d’autres renseignements sur la distribution.
L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) avise la population de ne pas consommer la laitue romaine de marque Tanimura & Antle décrite ci dessous car ce produit pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie E. coli O157:H7.
Le produit visé, la laitue romaine de marque Tanimura & Antle, un produit des États-Unis, a été vendu en emballages de plastique contenant une seule pomme de laitue. L’emballage porte le CUP 0 27918 20314 9. Le produit visé a été vendu au détail du 8 août 2012 au 17 août 2012.
Ce produit a été distribué en Ontario, au Manitoba, en Saskatchewan, en Alberta, en Colombie-Britannique, au Nunavut, au Yukon et dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest.
Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ce produit n’a été confirmé.
Les aliments contaminés par E. coli O157:H7 ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut occasionner des maladies graves, parfois mortelles, qui se manifestent notamment par des douleurs abdominales intenses et de la diarrhée sanguine. Certaines personnes peuvent avoir des convulsions ou des accidents cérébrovasculaires, d’autres peuvent avoir besoin de transfusions sanguines et de dialyse. Dans certains cas, les dommages causés aux reins sont permanents. Dans les cas graves, la contamination par E. coli O157:H7 peut causer la mort.
Les distributeurs canadiens retirent volontairement du marché le produit visé. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
