Update Health Hazard Alert: Over 135 Affected Ground Beef Products of Establishment 761 Recalled

This is an update to all previous blogs concerning certain frozen beef products that were manufactured by New Food Classics (1122 International Blvd., Suite 601, Burlington, Ontario, Canada), which are part of an ongoing investigation into E. coli in certain frozen beef products:

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation has just reported the following update to provide details of over 135 affected products under various brand names and codes that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria:

The details regarding retailers’ and distributors’ recall of all affected products from the marketplace are as follows:

  • In addition to their brand names and codes, the affected products listed can be identified by the Establishment number that appears on the packages, cartons or cases:
    • The products made at this facility bear Establishment number (EST) 761.
  • This recall is part of an ongoing food safety investigation:
    • The CFIA is working with the responsible company to identify all affected products.
    • As this information becomes available, it will be immediately included in the table on the CFIA website to help consumers identify all affected products.
    • The CFIA is working with all retailers and distributors to recall all affected products from the marketplace.
  • These products have been distributed nationally to retail stores, restaurants, and institutional establishments, and were manufactured between July 1, 2011 and February 15, 2012.
  • There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of one of the affected products.

OTTAWA, March 19, 2012 – As a result of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) investigation, the public warning issued on March 17, 2012 has been updated to provide details of over 135 affected products under various brand names and codes that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

In addition to their brand names and codes, the affected products listed can be identified by the Establishment number that appears on the packages, cartons or cases. The products made at this facility bear Establishment number (EST) 761.

This recall is part of an ongoing food safety investigation. The CFIA is working with the responsible company to identify all affected products. As this information becomes available, it will be immediately included in the table on the CFIA website to help consumers identify all affected products.

These products have been distributed nationally to retail stores, restaurants, and institutional establishments, and were manufactured between July 1, 2011 and February 15, 2012.

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of one of the affected products.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The CFIA is working with all retailers and distributors to recall all affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 19 mars 2012 – Dans le cadre de l’enquête de l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA), la mise en garde du 17 mars 2012 a été modifiée pour fournir des détails sur plus de 135 produits touchés portant divers noms de marque et codes qui pourraient être contaminés par la bactérie E. coli O157:H7.

En plus du nom de marque et du code, le numéro d’établissement qui figure sur les emballages, les boîtes et les caisses permet d’identifier les produits visés. Les produits fabriqués à cet établissement portent le numéro d’établissement (EST) 761.

Le présent rappel fait partie d’une enquête en cours sur la salubrité des aliments. L’ACIA collabore avec l’entreprise responsable afin de recenser tous les produits touchés. Ces renseignements seront ajoutés au tableau dans le site Web de l’ACIA à mesure qu’ils seront disponibles pour aider les consommateurs à identifier tous les produits touchés.

Ces produits ont été distribués à l’échelle nationale à des magasins de vente au détail, à des restaurants et à des établissements institutionnels et ont été fabriqués entre le 1er juillet 2011 et le 15 février 2012.

Un cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits a été signalé.

Les aliments contaminés par E. coli O157:H7 ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut occasionner des maladies graves, parfois mortelles, qui se manifestent notamment par des douleurs abdominales intenses et de la diarrhée sanguine. Certaines personnes peuvent avoir des convulsions ou des accidents cérébrovasculaires, d’autres peuvent avoir besoin de transfusions sanguines et de dialyse. Dans certains cas, les dommages causés aux reins sont permanents. Dans les cas graves, la contamination par E. coli O157:H7 peut causer la mort.
